Support for Ukraine

Since the news broke out about the Russian Invasion of Ukraine, Leigh-on-Sea Town Council have been at the forefront of organising donations locally and are now launching a social group for Ukrainian families and their hosts.

Surge of Local Support for Ukraine - 4th March 2022

Leigh-on-Sea Town Council have been working with Leigh Tin Teams and other local groups to provide a donation point in Leigh to collect items for Ukraine. Leigh Community Centre has been receiving donations all week to send to Poland and Ukraine, which are being fed in to The Mega Centre in Rayleigh who are organising storage and onward transportation.

A huge amount of donations hav been received including food, toiletries, nappies, medical supplies and practical items such as candles and batteries. Surplus items have been donated to a variety of local food banks and homeless charities, so will not go to waste.

Staff and councillors at Leigh Town Council really can't thank the people of Leigh enough for everything they have done so far, including the army of volunteers who have come to the centre to help pack boxes and deliver donations.

Town Council launch Community Hub for Ukrainian families - 9th June 2022

Leigh-on-Sea Town Council are pleased to be providing weekly community sessions for Ukrainian refugees and their host families at Leigh Community Centre starting from Thursday 9th June.

The aim of the group will be to provide a social hub for Ukrainians to meet other families that are staying locally, and also for the host families to be able to interact with each other, hopefully achieving a strong local support network for Ukrainians, making them feel welcome and integrated to the area.

The Council have been working closely with other organisations including Welcome to the UK and Southend City Council, to ensure they are providing a suitable community space for those who are now residing in the Southend area. Support with finances, language, mental health and more can all be obtained through these groups and their partners, but the Town Council have spotted a gap of just providing a relaxed and laid-back space for the different families to come together and get to know each other in a friendly and central location.

Where possible we aim to provide a translator at the sessions to help with overcoming language barriers, and light refreshments will also be available. Information about the local area and services will also be on hand as well as some activities for children.  The sessions will be completely free of charge and funded by Leigh-on-Sea Town Council.

The group will be running on Thursday afternoons from 4pm – 5.30pm in Lorna & Lottie’s Café, situated on the ground floor of Leigh Community Centre, each week from 9th June.

If you would be interested in volunteering at the sessions please get in touch, or for more information, please call 01702 716288 or email council@leighonseatowncouncil.gov.uk.
